On September 30th,2020, China Alliance for Rare Diseases (CARD) announced the list for theirfourth batch of new members. Beijing United Foundation for China’s Health (UFCH), togetherwith other healthcare organizations, was among the list as a newly electedmember in CARD.
China Alliance forRare Diseases is approved by Chinese National Health Commission, and it is compiledwith more than 200 health organizations, higher-education institutions,research centers,and business entities. Beijing Union Hospital,China Pharmaceutical Industry Research and Development Association, Chinese Hospital Association, and Chinese Research Hospital Association, CARD strivesto build a tight connection between institutions that dedicate themselves to raredisease researches and improvement. The mission statement of CARD is “Tounderstand rare diseases; to care the patients”.
As a member in theCARD, Beijing United Foundation for China’s Health holds the responsibility to fulfill itsmission statement. In order to achieve this goal, UFCH has collaborated with Beijing United Family Hospital to introduce the philanthropic Multi-DisciplinaryTeam consultation (including on-line re-outpatient visit) to patients with rarediseases.
Question 1: What type of “rare diseases” thatUnited Family capable to treat?
Answer 1:
Corresponding to thelist of 120 plus rare diseases published by the national guideline, Beijing United Family Hospital has selected more than ten rare diseases for theservice. This list was made with careful considerations of the hospital’sstrength and the capacity in the Internal Medicine and Pathology Departments.
Question 2: Who is paying the pill?
Answer 2: United FamilyCharitable Fund
In adherence to our socialresponsibility, United Family Healthcare donates medical services worth of 1%of its revenue each year to provide assistance to orphans, children withdisability, migrant population, rare disease patients and groups in medical need. Since theestablishment of the first hospital in 1997, United Family Healthcare hasaccumulatively donated medical services worth of 150 million RMB and saved morethan 20,000 people in need.
Established in 2012,“United Family Charitable Fund” receives donation from the United Family Healthcare and isunder the supervision of Overseas Chinese Charity Foundation of China.Currently, the fund is under the execution of Beijing United Foundation of China’s Health.
Question 3: How do I apply for the service?

Please refer to the guidelinebelow in application for the “United Family Charitable Fund” and send anapplication email to foundation@ufh.com.cn
1) Beneficiaries of medical assistance
a. Orphans / Children in low-income family (0-18 years)
b. Individuals with disability
c. Migrant population
d. Family with financial difficulty/ adults in poverty-stricken areas
e. Rare disease patients
2) Medical service included: Medical consultation for rare diseases listedabove (on-line revisit included), and others.
3) Medical service procedure:
a. Application submission from the patient
i. Orphanage or foster homes can fill in and submit the copies of application,residency approval letter, and the prove of status for orphans
ii. Patients in families with financial difficulties need to fill in andsubmit the copies of applicationand residency approval letter with assistance from non-profitorganization, custodian or by his/herself. Regional committee needs to providea prove of poverty along with the other documents.
b. After careful auditing, applicant will sign an assistance contract withBeijing United Foundation for China’s Health
c. Proceed with the medical service
